Shortly after I started working for the school I began to discover the many dirty little secrets about bartending classes.
The biggest issue with an education from a school isn’t the shortage of knowledge…in fact, its the opposite. The problem with traditional bartending schools is that you’re learning waaaaay too much of generally, the wrong information.
Let me explain…
A lot of traditional mixology, and the information taught at bartending schools is based on a culinary school point of view. Meaning you’re studying the material the same way as if you were training to be a professional chef.
And mixology, or the art of understanding and creating various aromas and flavor combinations as a top class craft cocktail bartender is one way to go, but is not the mass general, or even necessary the best way to go. The other X factor on bar education is the type of bar that you want to work at.
So then I ask you, why pay for something that might be helpful?
Reflecting back to my experience working at a school, there was something else that was very odd… shortly after I started I was quickly promoted and appointed to the level of “School Director” and was teaching every class.
I thought, why did the new guy suddenly teach every class?
I wasn’t complaining of course because it meant I was getting paid more, but I was curious and asked my boss, the school owner, about my quick promotion. He confided in me what I later found to be true for, at least in our Southern California market, an alarming number of bartending school owners…
